The Montessori method is one of the fundamental ways of teaching children while nurturing independence and the development of each child’s potential.
Most importantly, it allows children to work at their own pace to become the best they can be.
Who was Maria Montessori?
Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), was one of the most significant early years educators of the twentieth century.
Montessori was the innovator of classroom practices and ideas which have had a strong influence on the education of young children all over the world.
What is the Montessori Method?
Montessori encourages children to do things for themselves and think for themselves.
Everything in the classroom is child size and the enticing equipment and materials are placed on low shelves so they can be easily accessed by the children.
Understanding, dexterity, and specific skills are developed each time the child uses the materials.
The children are of a mixed age group and this allows the young ones to learn from the older children. They are also able to develop socially and emotionally.
The child, initially helped by a trained adult to guide him or her in doing things, will then work with the activities independently.
Each child is assessed through observations and will be shown new activities gradually, as and when he or she is ready.
